A Little About Me

I am a highly versatile IT generalist with a thorough understanding of systems and infrastructure administration and design. I most enjoy helping people and organisations optimise their technology investments and develop tactics and strategies for appropriate IT deployments. The constantly changing IT landscape energises me, intrigues me, and challenges me to learn and grow so that I may reliably advise and guide my peers as I am likewise mentored by them.

[I’ve been a little lax, and this is approx. 1yr old.]

As a Systems Engineer I am required to be the final point of fault escalation within an organisation for most issues, and tasked with leading and mentoring an engineering team in our goal to provide 99.9%-99.99% uptime for all services. My current environment environment currently consists of approximately 150 Windows 2003 servers and 20 Windows 2000 servers in a mixture of Standard, Enterprise, and some Datacentre. Hardware and software refresh is a constant cycle, along with new servers coming under management as a result of mergers and acquisitions.

I utilise a large number of Microsoft software products and technologies, all of which I am able to design, implement, and maintain. These include Window Server, Active Directory (AD), Group Policy, Distributed File System (DFS), File Replication Services (FRS/DFS-R), Exchange Server, Terminal Services, SQL Server, Sharepoint (STS/SPS), Office Communications Server (LCS/OCS), Internet Information Server (IIS), Internet Authentication Service (IAS), Commerce Server, Windows Media Services (WMS), Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, Windows Load Balancing (WLBS), Windows Clustering, Virtual Server, Remote Installation Services (RIS), Windows Deployment Services (WDS), Active Deployment Services (ADS), Systems Management Server (SMS), Configuration Manager (SCCM), Operations Manager (MOM/SCOM), Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), Data Protection Manager (DPM), and Visual Source Safe.

It’s not all about Microsoft though as I also design, implement, and maintain Citrix Presentation Server, Citrix Access Gateway, Checkpoint VPN-1/UTM-1 and Edge firewalls, Nokia IPSO Platforms, Nokia Intelliync Server, Blackberry Enterprise Server, RSA Authentication Server (SecurID), RSA RADIUS Server, Marshal Software MailMarshal and WebMarshal, Backup Exec, Arcserve, Cisco routers and switches, IBM BladeCentres, IBM FASTt SANs, Brocade Fibre Switches, and Performance Solutions IPFX VoIP Voicemail/CallCentre Server. Finally, I provide the supporting infrastructure required to operate the substantial SAP implementation in place although I have no direct experience with managing an SAP system.

An integral part of the engineering role is software and hardware lifecycle planning, incorporating accurate needs analysis, capacity planning and forecasting, plans for capital and recurrent budgets, detailed performance analysis and testing, ongoing maintenance and update plans, succession planning, and graceful decommissioning of retired software and hardware. These functions are performed as part of day-to-day operational problem resolution as well as in conjunction with the Infrastructure Architect office.

Last, but most definitely not least, I have moderate experience managing Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Redhat, CentOS) and Solaris UNIX-based systems, moderate experience programming in Python, maintaining Subversion source repositories, Trac software project management wikis, and extensive VBscript and PowerShell programming experience.
